How long does PHGG take to work?

This is one of the most common questions we get.

And the honest answer is:

It depends on the person, the dose, the rest of your diet and what you're hoping to notice.

Clinical studies have measured changes over different time periods.

Some have reported improvements within the first few weeks, while others have followed participants for 8–12 weeks.

For example, one study investigating PHGG in IBS used a 6 g daily dose for 12 weeks and found improvements in bloating and bloating-plus-gas compared with placebo. [3]

Another study followed healthy adults taking PHGG for three months and observed changes in stool form and gut microbiota. [1]

Other research has measured changes over around four weeks. [4]

So rather than promising that you'll notice a particular result in exactly seven days, we prefer to think about PHGG as a daily nutritional habit.

Some people notice changes in their digestion relatively quickly.

For others, it can take a few weeks of consistent use.

Give your gut time to adjust.

If you're new to supplemental fibre, starting with a smaller amount and gradually increasing is often a more comfortable approach.

What the research says about PHGG and bloating

Bloating is one of the reasons people are particularly interested in PHGG.

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 108 people with IBS investigated 6 g of PHGG daily for 12 weeks.

The researchers reported significant improvements in bloating and bloating-plus-gas scores compared with placebo. They also reported that PHGG was well tolerated. [3]

That doesn't mean PHGG is a treatment for IBS.

It means there is human research suggesting that this particular type of fibre may be useful when incorporated into the diet of people experiencing certain gastrointestinal symptoms.

And that's an important distinction.

PHGG and bowel regularity

PHGG has also been studied for bowel function.

Research has investigated its effects on stool consistency, bowel frequency and gastrointestinal symptoms in different populations.

One randomised study in people with constipation-predominant IBS found improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms, stool consistency and colonic transit time following PHGG supplementation. [5]

Another study investigated 5 g of PHGG daily in older adults with chronic constipation and assessed changes in bowel function over four weeks. [4]

There is also research comparing PHGG with wheat bran in people with IBS.

In a multicentre study involving 188 adults, participants received either 5 g of PHGG or 30 g of wheat bran daily.

Both groups experienced improvements, but PHGG was well tolerated and was preferred by more participants. [6]

Again, these studies don't mean that everyone needs PHGG.

They show why this particular fibre has become interesting enough to study in humans.

Why we didn't just make a PHGG powder

You can buy PHGG on its own.
